Asics and spiritual guidance

My left calf hurts when I’m running on the treadmill. This is due to the fact that I’m a pronator (I step inwards on my sole). I’m running with neutral shoes now, a generic of the shelf model, inhibiting my running style. Therefore I had to go to the local running shop – Runner’s Roost. The people at Runner’s Roost were excellent. If you live in the Colorado Springs area and need shoes go there!

Lollie and I had to try on several pairs of shoes and then do some running. Peter watched us run and listened to the sound of our feet hitting the concrete surface, guiding us to the shoe that will work best for our individual running styles. We spent an hour at the shop, learning and growing. Peter was busy teaching a new person at the shop to see the different running styles and how the shoes respond – a fine example of on the job discipleship!

I was reflecting on my day and came to the conclusion that sadly Christ followers spend almost no time at all looking at their spiritual journeys through the eyes of a Peter (at the shop). We forget that every person has a unique spiritual running style – a style that cannot be embraced by a generic formula. Spiritual Guidance or direction is the discipline through which we invite someone to listen to our Spiritual running. Helping us to optimize our training and therefore stretching us to grow in a healthy manner. I have a few people in my life fulfilling this function (a few of you are reading this – thanks), and through the grace of God some have invited me into their lives for this purpose.

You’ve been raised on the Message of the faith and have followed sound teaching. Now pass on this counsel to the Christians there, and you’ll be a good servant of Jesus. Stay clear of silly stories that get dressed up as religion. Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. 1 Timothy 4 (The message Bible)
