That evening Nicodemus came to Jesus in the mystery of the
night.  Jesus shared with him an
amazing mystery, “unless one is born of water and Spirit he cannot enter the
kingdom of heaven.”

Today we assume that we know what this means – for us it’s as
clear as light. Then Nicodemus had to hear about the Spirit.  Today we need to hear that we also have
to be born in the flesh (of water).

I’m afraid that in western societies we’ve spiritualized the
mystery beyond a rootedness in ordinary life.  Instead of being born of water and Spirit we’re drifting
into an a-historical philosophy that touches nothing in reality – “for everyone
is spiritual”.
