This Sunday is the second Sunday after Epiphany and one of the readings is Psalm 40. One of the verses states,

In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,

but you have given me an open ear (ears you have dug for me).

Burnt offering and sin offering

you have not required.  Psalm 40:6

The Hebrew phrase literally reads “ears you have dug for me.” God graciously opens deaf ears. Spiritual formation ventures a first step through the sacred act of listening. Jesus regularly invited his listeners to hear. His first parable, the famous one about the sower starts with the command Listen! It ends with the invitation, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Mark 4:3;9)

The invitation is in listening to God, others, creation and our own lives. May this be a week where we invite our gracious God to dig ears for us. Shema!
