Today I want to explore the word “spiritual” in front of formation. Why do we add this word? I think it has to do with the fact that we want to convey that this kind of formation is peculiar and draws on a specific reservoir – for us in the Christian stream this is the Triune God made visible in Jesus.
I don’t have a problem with this and I think it is wise.
But.
We (or I) live in a culture that still lives with a deep dichotomy between what is supposedly “spiritual” on the one side and what is “fleshly” on the other. This dualism wreaks havoc in lives and leads to compartmentalization.
With this in mind I find it helpful to sometimes just think of formation. What we do in our whole life (whether ‘spiritual’ or ‘physical’) forms us. What do you think?
