I’m getting ready to take a few guys in our community to the Drakensberg. The Drakensberg is a wilderness area in South Africa comparable to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Twelve of us will hike through some of the most beautiful terrain in our country – we will take time to suffer and seek God in His creation. The beauty of wilderness!

In the last few years we’ve discovered the power of engaging in spiritual formation using creation. It makes sense doesn’t it? Moses, John the Baptist, Paul and Jesus all engaged God in the wilderness, a place where everything is not plastic and technology pregnant.

Dallas Willard said at one time that the reason why we feel so invigorated after being in creation is because it’s one of the places on earth where God’s kingdom is still working as it should. When we’re there this design rubs off on us.

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.” -John Muir
