One morning during the vacation Liam brought me the children’s Bible and asked me to read him a bunch of stories out of the life of Jesus. This particular Bible was in English so I had to translate on the fly. As we read through the different accounts we got to the choosing of the disciples. At a point I translated the word “disciples” with an Afrikaans word, “bende”. I explained to Liam that Jesus called a “bende” of disciples who went around doing good to the world.
For the next few days Liam became fascinated with the concept of being part of a “bende”. An English equivalent would be a “gang”.  A gang designed in investing in the goodness of the world. Liam’s fascination fueled my imagination with the thought of being part of a group of people who are spending their creative energy for the good of the people and places around them.
